Dogs sniff out bed bugs

Vegas the beagle has been trained to sniff out bed bugs from firefighters gear to make sure they don’t bring them home with them.

The pup is on a team called K9 Inspectors that visits Vancouver firehalls several times a month to make sure the creepy crawlers aren’t present in trucks and gear.

Dog handler Marcos Michelet will wait for an alert from Vegas if he smells a bed bug.

"I walk the dog along the gear. Once he smells the bed bugs, he'll give an alert. His alert is that he sits down and he stares at where the smell is coming from," Michelet told CTV.

If Vegas detects the bugs, gear is bagged up and taken to the department’s own bed bug oven. The equipment is then cooked for two hours to kill any bugs inside.

Deputy fire chief Brian Godlonton said they’ve had dozens of exposures in the last year.

"If it's not identified right away, the bugs can be transported with their staff in their personal vehicles and potentially back to their homes,” he said.
