Lightning in January?

Ever heard of "Thundersnow"? Well that's exactly what we got in the Okanagan overnight.

According to Wikipedia: "Thundersnow, also known as a winter thunderstorm or a thundersnowstorm, is an unusual kind of thunderstorm with snow falling as the primary precipitation instead of rain. It typically falls in regions of strong upward motion within the cold sector of an extratropical cyclone. Thermodynamically, it is not different from any other type of thunderstorm, but the top of the cumulonimbus cloud is usually quite low. In addition to snow, graupel, or hail may fall."

Residents across the valley saw a quick flash of lightning and heard a loud bang of thunder and then social media lit up Monday night.

Thousands took to social media to comment on a rare January thunderstorm.

Many were asking if they were crazy for seeing lightning and hearing thunder in the winter.

"My boyfriend thinks I'm crazy. Did anyone else see/hear the thunder and lightning?" One person posted on the Vernon and Area Community Forum.

Another wrote: "I thought I was going crazy. I saw a super bright flash through the window even through the curtains”

"Thanks All, I thought I was losing it.. just never thought lightning happened in colder conditions."

From aliens to music, everything was being cited as a possible cause.

"I heard it! It was Imagine Dragons."

"I saw thunder and lighting oh baby it was frightening!!!! Now if I could only remember the name of the song!!!! Help me out, folks."

"It was hailing for a few minutes then bam, one flash of lightning & one crack of thunder, then it was over kinda magical."

"Oh yeah I saw the lightning and I was bouncing in my chair cuz I thought maybe a Transformer had blew but it was thunder and lightning I have never seen that in 40 years living here in Vernon in the winter time."

While rare, thunderstorms in January have happened before in the Okanagan.

"Last few years there was lightning flashes from January on....But I guess nobody was paying attention then... It did seem odd but it happened..."

"Yes, and then after, environment Canada put that there was a risk of thunderstorms up on their website. Predicting after the fact!"
