Skier buried in avalanche

A group of four backcountry skiers found themselves in an avalanche on Hollyburn Mountain in West Vancouver, Saturday, but managed to escape without injuries.

Three skiers were caught in the slide, two of whom deployed airbags. Both remained at the surface and were only partially buried. The third skier was fully buried.

“The first skier dropped, skied slope with minor sloughing, skied to island of safety,” stated Avalanche Canada.

As others prepared to drop in, the convex feature collapsed beneath them.

“The fracture immediately propagated to horizontal surrounding concave slopes and also vertically above the party to increasingly steeper slopes, up to an undetermined/non-visible extent.”

The avalanche took place just after 9 a.m.

The buried skier was immediately located with a transceiver and extracted.
