Large mail theft bust

Police in Grand Forks say they have recovered a large amount of stolen property and arrested two men in connection to a rash of mail theft in the Kootenays.

Police were called to a mailbox theft in progress on Monday around 4:45 a.m. near Christina Lake, where officers intercepted two men in a stolen Dodge pickup truck.

In the truck, was an “extensive amount” of stolen property later linked to numerous break and enters discovered in Christina Lake over the course of that day.

Mitchell Olheiser, 25, of Cranbrook is facing several charges and remains in custody. The second man was released on a promise to appear.

Police are combing through “several hundred exhibits,” with some already returned to the rightful owners.

“We ask that the public refrain from attending the Grand Forks RCMP Detachment to inquire if their items are amongst those recovered. We are in the process of contacting the owners of the property in our possession. As this is an active criminal investigation, the property will be returned as soon as we possibly can,” stated Sgt Jim Fenske of the Grand Forks RCMP.

Investigators are also working to link the charged men with other offences in Cranbrook, Nelson and Castlegar.
