Parks Canada issued an extreme wave hazard advisory for the Pacific Rim region on Thursday.

An Extreme wave hazard has been issued for Ucluelet, Tofino and Pacific Rim National Park Reserve Thursday afternoon.

Beaches in the District of Tofino have been closed and will remain closed until Jan. 19 at the earliest.

“Hazardous conditions are shoreline flooding, flooded beaches, large waves breaking high up on the shore, extremely hazardous surf conditions and floating logs,” stated the District of Tofino.

Environment Canada said waves are measured at 9.5 metres at La Perouse Bank Buoy west of Tofino.

“Waves heights are peaking now,” stated Environment Canada. “They are forecast to subside over the next 12 hours.”

Residents are being advised to bring loose objects inside, monitor the weather and use caution.

“Due to hazardous conditions, please keep a safe distance from the shoreline and coastal waters if you’re planning on viewing the storm,” states the advisory.
