Thief poses as police

A thief is posing as a police officer in Surrey.

RCMP are warning the public to beware people claiming to be police officers who are not wearing a full uniform.

A man purporting to be a police officer stole from victims on Dec. 2 and again Dec. 19.

In both cases, a South Asian male entered the victim’s home with consent. When the opportunity presented itself, the suspect stole cash and credit cards, and then fled.

The suspect is described as a South Asian male, 20 to 40 years old, six feet tall, clean shaven, wearing all black clothing.

“It is perfectly acceptable to ask someone identifying themselves as a police officer for their credentials, like a badge and photo ID card,” says Cpl. Scotty Schumann. “If you’re not satisfied with the information provided, you can contact the police of jurisdiction to confirm the officer’s attendance. Dispatchers will be able to tell you if an officer is at your door.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or www.solvecrime.ca.
