Tried to drown police dog

A suspect tried to drown a police dog during a wild chase on Vancouver Island.

RCMP arrested a man after the lengthy foot chase through the wilderness near Qualicum Beach on Dec. 28.

Officers spotted a stolen vehicle stuck in a ditch about 11 p.m. When the driver and a passenger were ordered to get out of the car, the driver fled into the bush.

A police dog tracked the man for three and a half hours and when finally cornered on a river bank, he tried to run again – dragging the dog into the river in an attempt to drown it.

Officers Tasered the man and took him into custody. Weapons were found in the stolen car.

Justin John Chester, 29, faces charges including possession of property obtained by crime, possession of break-in tools, failing to stop for police and failing to comply with a probation order.

The passenger, Christopher Wade Rathby, 32, faces charges of possession of property obtained by crime and possession of break-in tools.
