House fire during outage

An Abbotsford family that is still without power from a freezing rain storm had to evacuate their home on Saturday, after a fire broke out in their wood-burning fireplace.

Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service responded to the incident in the afternoon, and upon their arrival the blaze had spread to the wall.

Assistant fire chief Ron Hull told CTV the family will likely be displaced while the damage is repaired.

About 26,000 BC Hydro customers in the Fraser Valley remain without power, following ice storms that pelted the region on Thursday and Friday and cut power to about 134,000 total customers.

Hull warned residents in the area of downed power lines and falling trees.

"If you can stay home, stay home. It'd be really nice to keep you off the roads."
