Car takes out power pole

As if crews in the Lower Mainland aren't already strained trying to resolve power outages caused by weather, their plate was added to when a vehicle took out a power pole in Surrey.

RCMP responded to a crash just before 3 p.m. in North Surrey, and arrived to find a car had struck a pole, which has resulted in a local power outage.

According to BC Hydro's outage list online, about 1,750 customers are without power in the area.

The pole broke and "ended up across the roadway," Surrey RCMP said in a news release.

The incident occurred at 104th Avenue and Whalley Boulevard, a busy area for commuters in the city.

Police said traffic there "will be affected for an undetermined time," until BC Hydro is able to attend the scene.

The public is asked to avoid the area until further notice.
