Dicey conditions on Coq.

Treacherous conditions are being reported on the Coquihalla Highway.

At least three accidents appear to have occurred between Merritt and Hope on Highway 5.

Tractor-trailers are involved, and according to one witness, “have spun out even with chains on.”

Heavy snow is falling, and Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the Fraser Valley, including Hope.

“Out of the whole Coquihalla, Box Canyon heading north leaving Hope is the worst. Very treacherous right now,” said one driver.

A strong low-pressure system will move towards Vancouver Island, and snowfall is expected to intensify this afternoon. Drive BC says delays are to be expected due to “heavy congestion between Hope and Merritt.”

Ten to 20 centimetres of snow is possible before an extended period of freezing rain.

“A significant layer of ice is possible through Friday, especially over Central and Eastern sections,” states Environment Canada.

Drivers are being urged to use caution and drive to road conditions.
