ORIGINAL: Thursday 3:30 p.m.

One person is dead and several are injured following a three-vehicle crash on Highway 1 Thursday.

At 12:30 p.m. Dec. 21, Revelstoke RCMP received several 911 calls regarding an accident near the Craigellachie rest area.

“Information received was of three vehicles involved and multiple injuries,” said Staff Sgt. Kurt Grabinsky. “Police and BCAS arrived and located three vehicles, spread in different directions, speaking to a head on collision.

“In the three vehicles there were several seriously injured persons, including one female entrapped and determined deceased.”

A dog was also found dead at the scene and two men were in critical condition.

People in the third vehicle appeared to have only minor or no injuries.

The injured parties were taken to either the Revelstoke, Salmon Arm or Kamloops hospitals by BCAS.

The accident is currently under investigation by multiple agencies.

“The road closure is expected for several hours, with possible re-opening by 7 p.m.,” said Grabinsky, adding the delay is due to address well-being of patients, clearing up road conditions, police examination of the scene, final clean up and then a safe and measured re-opening.

There are no detours available.

Police suggest that the public should check driving conditions prior to commencing travels through mountain areas in the winter.
