4 elk shot, left to die

Four elk were shot and left dead near a public road in the District of Hudson’s Hope, west of Fort St. John, in what conservation officers are calling a very disrespectful act.

Conservation officers received reports of shots being fired on a public road near private property in Farrell Creek on Sunday.

“Two conservation officers attended yesterday morning and located four dead elk and one injured elk,” said Conservation Officer Murray Booth.

“We are obviously concerned, it is very dangerous," he said. "There is a residence nearby, the animals were left… very disrespectful.”

A fifth elk that was shot ran through a fence and is injured but under its “own power."

“We are monitoring that elk,” he said.

The investigation is very active at this time but officers would not release any further information about suspects.

“I can’t divulge too much information. We have recovered evidence,” said Booth.

Booth said he will be seeking multiple fines and that there will be a report to Crown counsel.

““It is not pleasant at all,” he said.
