Tolko fire still smoldering

Officials with Tolko say the fire at the company's Lakeview sawmill operation in Williams Lake continues to smolder.

In a news release Monday evening, officials with the company say the fire, which broke out Thursday evening, had several flare-ups over the weekend and into Monday.

The fire, confined mainly to the office section of the mill, was burning between the ceiling and roof making it difficult to fight from the outside. It was not safe to access from the inside.

The fire was still smoldering Monday evening, but under control.

A preliminary assessment of damage has been complete, with structural engineers now beginning to determine the integrity of the building.

That work is expected to be done in the next few days.

The planer mill, which is in a separate building, is back up and running.

Once the site is safe and secure, Tolko says it plans to put a recovery plan in place to determine when the rest of the mill can resume operations.
