A 'think of me' campaign is aimed at distract drivers in school zones.

A road safety campaign aimed at distracted drivers is being launched near schools in Surrey and White Rock tomorrow.

RCMP officers from the Surrey and White Rock detachments will be issuing drivers handmade warnings created by elementary school students, as a visible reminder to 'think of me' and 'take a break from your phone' while driving.

The campaign is starting during September's distracted driving awareness month and has the backing of the Surrey and White Rock RCMP, ICBC, Surrey Crime Prevention Society, Surrey School District and students.

“This campaign is a great opportunity to involve students in driving home the message that high risk driving behaviour, including distracted driving, is dangerous and can increase your risk of crashing,” said Cpl. Scotty Schumann of the Surrey RCMP. “Now that the school year has begun, drivers are encouraged to slow down, allow extra travel time and avoid distractions, especially around school zones.”

“More than 800 crashes occur every day in B.C., many of these caused by distracted driving,” said Karen Klein of ICBC. “No call or text is worth the risk. Distracted driving is a dangerous and preventable behaviour that we must all commit to ending.”
