A water main break forced the evacuation of several blocks in East Vancouver early Tuesday.
A geyser of water sprayed into the air on Nanaimo Street, between 27th and 29th Avenues about 1 a.m.
Several homes were flooded before the water was shut off.
The rupture left buckled pavement and a large, water-filled sink hole in the street. Traffic is reduced to a single lane in either direction, and repairs could take at least a day.
City of Vancouver director of engineering Daniel Roberge said the water main was built in 1961, and the break is believed to be several metres long.
