ORIGINAL: 3 p.m.

Highway 1 continues to be closed after a rockslide on Sunday evening in Fraser Canyon.

The rockslide took place about one kilometre north of Yale.

Rock debris is blocking the highway at this time and CP Rail has a backlog of rail traffic passing through the railway below the slide area.

“Due to challenging terrain, unclear slope conditions and the need to accommodate railway traffic, it is uncertain at this point whether the slide start zone can be scaled sufficiently today to satisfy (Ministry of Transportation) MOTI's safety concerns,” said Emil Anderson Maintenance.

Rail traffic will be stopped for five hours at 11 a.m. on Wednesday to allow for uninterrupted rock-scaling work.

No one was injured during the slide, but some vehicles were damaged as a result.

An alternative route has been created from Highway 5 and 8.
