Coq: medical emergency

UPDATE: 7 p.m.

The Coquihalla Highway south of Merritt was shut down in both directions for more than an hour Monday for what is being called a medical emergency.

Traffic in both directions was brought to a halt while an emergency helicopter was called to the scene. The helicopter landed on the highway to airlift a patient from the area.

One Castanet reader who drove by the scene prior to the closure said he thought a small child being attended to.

No other details have been made available.


UPDATE: 5:58 p.m.

The Coquihalla Highway has reopened in both directions.

The highway was shut down this afternoon at the Kingsvale (Coldwater Road) exit south of Merritt for what is being called a 'police incident.'

No other details have been made available as to the nature of the incident.

More details when they become available.

The Coquihalla Highway remains at a standstill.

One driver stuck in traffic said he's heard the delay is due to a crash. 

DriveBC says the route is closed due to a "police incident."


ORIGINAL: 4:40 p.m.

A police incident is causing gridlock on Highway 5. 

One driver stuck in the jam sent a photo to Castanet showing bumper-to-bumper northbound traffic he says goes on for kilometres.

DriveBC says the highway is closed in both directions at the Kingsvale (Coldwater Road) exit south of Merritt.

It advises to "expect delays."
