Killer fled to Kelowna

Police are seeking the public's help in locating a suspect in a Surrey homicide that has a link to Kelowna.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team appealed for public help, Friday, in identifying and locating a suspect in the death of Birinderjeet Justin Bhangu on March 13.

Bhangu was shot and killed in the parking lot of the Comfort Inn Hotel while seated in his Acura SUV.

The shooting is believed to be targeted, and Bhangu was known to police.

"While a motive hasn’t been confirmed, it is believed that this shooting was a result of his criminal lifestyle," Staff Sgt. Jennifer Pound said in a press release.

IHIT released the following timeline of events:

  • Bhangu pulled into a parking spot in front of the hotel at 2:22 p.m. March 13.
  • The suspect, driving a Nissan Pathfinder, backed into a parking spot close by.
  • At 2:23 p.m. the suspect exits his vehicle and approaches Banghu from the driver’s side of the vehicle.
  • While approaching the vehicle, the suspect begins shooting at 2:24 p.m.
  • The suspect ran back to his vehicle and fled westbound, making a right hand turn onto Fraser Highway.
  • The suspect vehicle was recovered in Kelowna the following day (March 14).

“This was a shooting in broad daylight in an area where families and community members frequent," said Pound.
