SUV speeding before crash

Witnesses seem to be confirming what Vancouver police already suspect – an SUV that crashed, killing two, was speeding prior to the crash.

Three pedestrians were also injured in the crash at the intersection of Davie and Seymour streets about 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Police investigating the incident, which also injured three pedestrians, said early on "speed is going to be a factor."

The SUV slammed into a tree while trying to make the turn onto Davie, flipped on its side, then slammed into a power pole.

One witness, Holly Bligh, told CTV Vancouver, she saw the vehicle exit the Granville Bridge at a high rate of speed.

“This guy was just speeding ridiculously off the bridge, and ended up trying to cut off and rammed into the tree trunk and just flipped,” Bligh said.

Police have confirmed a 68-year-old male driver and his 70-year-old female passenger were killed at the scene.

Three pedestrians, all men, all in their 30s, were taken to hospital with a variety of injuries ranging from lacerations and bruising to a broken femur and punctured lung.

They were injured by flying debris from the tree.

Police have gathered video surveillance from the area, but continue to ask any witnesses to come forward. Witnesses can call 604-717-3012.

Investigators and the coroner are also trying to determine if any underlying medical conditions may have contributed to the crash.
