Last-ditch effort in lockout

Municipal workers in Kimberley are still on the job, at least for another day, after the City of Kimberley postponed plans to lock them out on Sunday.

The lockout, announced last Friday, was scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sunday, after months of negotiations failed to find a settlement with the city’s 80 members of the United Steelworkers of America.

But just at the deadline on Sunday, union officials announced the lockout would be postponed 38 hours. A union email said mediator Grant McArthur of the BC Labour Relations Board will make a last-ditch effort to reach a deal.

The two sides will sit down Monday morning to try to settle issues including wage increases, grandfathered vacation benefits and a job-evaluation system.

The city and union have an essential services agreement covering police and fire services, water and waste facilities, and cemetery operations. However, the city’s aquatic centre and two arenas will be closed and building inspection services will not be available. The schedule for garbage pickup has also been changed.

Without a new agreement, the lockout will take place on Tuesday at 5 a.m
