Mega-yacht runs aground

A multimillion-dollar luxury yacht ran aground near Pender Harbour, Wednesday.

Local boaters sprang into action and helped rescue the passengers and crew when they heard a mayday call as the Bellissima struck bottom and attempted to limp back to harbour while taking on water.

The Coast Guard stopped the 30-metre yacht from sinking and was aided by a local search and rescue boat.

Large pumps were used to clear water from the vessel.

"There's a lot of people with a lot of marine experience in this harbour who have lived here for years and years. So, there was like a flotilla of boats out there," Allyson Nelson told CTV as she watched the action.

A statement from Fisheries and Oceans Canada Wednesday night said: "The vessel is currently floating at its regular height, and anchored in Pender Harbour ... Canadian Coast Guard will remain on scene until the vessel is boomed off."

The Bellissima is registered out of San Francisco. Witnesses say its passengers left Pender Harbour on a chartered float plane.
