Expo Line in sad shape

SkyTrain's Expo Line is in need of $50 million in repairs.

A report by the National Research Council of Canada obtained by CTV under the Freedom of Information Act found 557 defects on the line that connects downtown Vancouver to Surrey.

The revelation drew reactions such as “disappointing" and “Holy smokes!” from the report's author.

The report slammed TransLink for track maintenance that is reactive, expensive and inefficient.

SkyTrain president Vivienne King downplayed the assessment.

“There were a number of defects found in the rail, but they are normal defects,” King told CTV. “We have a good maintenance regime in SkyTrain. We have a good plan, a clear plan.”

That plan is for annual inspections of the entire rail system and the replacement of 50 kilometres of track at a cost of roughly $50 million.
