Evacuee centre to close

An emergency centre set up for residents affected by the Rock Creek-Westbridge wildfire will shut down on Wednesday.

As most residents who were impacted by the fire have met with support agencies and evacuations have been lifted, the Midway Resilience Centre will be close at 5 p.m. Sept. 2.

However, all residents will be able to continue accessing the same services by calling the Red Cross at any time at 1-888-800-6493.

Those who lost their homes, animals or were otherwise traumatized can continue their recovery process by confidentially discussing what help they need with the Unmet Needs Committee. The committee will assess the needs in the affected areas and decide how best to use donated funds and keep them local, the Red Cross says.

The committee is made up of local community representatives and support agencies.

Members include Vicki Gee (Area E director for the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary), Les Jackman (president of the Kettle River Lions Club), Cathy Riddle (victim services co-ordinator), Ryan van Kuik (pastor of Boundary Community Church), Joyce Evans (Westbridge/Christian Valley resident), Samaritan’s Purse, Mennonite Disaster Service, Interior Health, the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary, the Canadian Red Cross and other agencies.
