Beloved dog shot to death

It was a horrific sight to see, his four-year-old Labrador/rottweiler cross lying dead next to a pile of animal hooves and blubber.

When Salmon Arm resident Steve Chambers went looking for his dog on a neighbour's property he found the animal shot to death.

Chambers, who lives in the rural Gleneden area, said the neighbour, a meat cutter, throws trimmings, blubber, hooves and other inedible animal parts into the woods on his acreage. He says these trimmings are attracting scavengers, coyotes and area dogs.

Chambers has contacted the SPCA, who are investigating.

He says the neighbour was recently told by conservation officers he must bury the waste and not just throw it in the woods.

Chambers also contacted the RCMP, but because the neighbour claims his dog was chasing cattle, police said he had the legal right to shoot it.

“The man has right to protect his cattle, and I get that, but he does not have to kill dogs,” said Chambers. “Whether it is legally right or not does not mean you should do it. It is a moral thing for me. He even admitted that he shot it and the whole bit.”

Chambers said he has never known his dog to chase livestock, noting its body was found next to the pile of meat trimmings, not where one might expect to find grazing cattle.

“This was absolutely an assassination,” Chambers charged. "I have never seen him chase a cow or anything. I've had him since he was a puppy.”

He said he's going public to warn other people in the neighbourhood.

“I just never for the life of me thought someone would shoot a dog,” said Chambers. “It was a family pet. He was my best friend. I am telling everyone in the neighbourhood to watch their dog. I am knocking on doors warning people.”

Salmon Arm RCMP Staff Sgt. Scott West said police are investigating the matter, but because it is under investigation he is unable to comment further.

According to the B.C. livestock act section 11.2: A person may kill a dog if the person finds the dog

(a) running at large, and

(b) attacking or viciously pursuing livestock.
