Fish with dad for free

Fish with dad for free this Father’s Day weekend.

During the 16th annual Family Fishing Weekend, June 19 to 21, families can borrow equipment, learn more about fishing or simply enjoy time together on the water without needing to purchase an angling licence.

“Whether you are learning together or spending a day enjoying a sport that you have enjoyed together for a long time, Family Fishing Weekend is a great way for the whole family to spend time together with dad,” says Michele Dusterhoft, president of the Family Fishing Society of B.C.

“It brings novices and experts together to enjoy what the sport has to offer in a fun environment.”

Volunteers will man more than 50 events at lakes, streams and rivers across the province, with hands-on help for beginners. Loaner rods, reels and tackle will be provided for those who do not have their own gear.

About 25,000 British Columbians participate in Family Fishing Weekend each year.

Events will be held at the following locations in the Thompson Okanagan:

  • Clearwater – Hallamore Lake, June 20
  • Clinton – Kelly Lake, June 21
  • Grand Forks – Jewel Lake, June 19-21
  • Greenwood – Jewel Lake, June 21
  • Kamloops – Walloper Lake, June 21
  • Kelowna – Okanagan Lake and Lamby Bear Lake, June 20
  • Merritt – Kentucky-Aleyne Lake, June 20
  • Princeton – Chain Lake, June 21
  • Salmon Arm – Shuswap Lake, June 21
  • West Kelowna – Shannon Lake, June 20

“Family Fishing Weekend is designed to be as accessible as possible not only so people are able to enjoy the sport with friends and family but also to provide opportunities to learn about the fish, their environment and the importance of conservation,” says Brian Springinotic, CEO, Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation.

“It reminds people that with enjoyment of the activity comes the need for responsible use, sustainable use, and stewardship of the resource to ensure many future generations will be enjoying fishing in our province.”

Freshwater and tidal fishing regulations, including daily catch quotas, still apply during Family Fishing Weekend.
