Vancouver's ethnic map

It's well known Vancouver is one of the most multicultural cities in the Canada, but you may not realize just how ‘segregated it still is.

A new interactive heat map created by Estate Block uses data from the National Household Survey to determine where different immigrant ethnicities reside in Metro Vancouver and across the South Coast.

The map, as seen above, utilizes colour coding to show where 10 of the most populous groups of identifiable immigrants live.

Categories include those from the United Kingdom, India, China, Philippines, Hong Kong, South Korea, Iran, United States, Netherlands and Taiwan.

When viewing the map, it's clear that certain ethnic groups tend to reside in areas together. A visit to any of the neighbourhoods will confirm local stores, shops and services are geared toward the ethnicity of the area.

It is also where you will find the best of that nationality's food and culture.

According to the map, the majority of immigrants in Metro Vancouver are of Chinese descent, occupying large chunks of neighbourhoods in Vancouver, Burnaby and Richmond.

The most expensive postal code in town, West Vancouver’s British Properties, is predominately owned by Iranians, as well the Ambleside area, lower North Vancouver, Coal Harbour, the central business district and Downtown South.

Vancouver’s Kitsilano, Point Grey, Fairview, the West End and False Creek are mostly inhabited by Brits. English immigrants also reside in sections of North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Delta and Langley.

Those from the Philippines make up the majority in parts of East Vancouver, East Richmond and North Surrey, while those from South Korea have chosen Coquitlam and North Surrey as their base.

The map also shows that those from India have carved out a strong base in Surrey.

According to the 2011 census, there are 159,200 people living in Metro Vancouver who were born in China, 111,265 born in India, 87,945 from the Philippines, 72,230 from Hong Kong and 61,255 born in the United Kingdom.
