Brush fire sparks in Lumby

Wind and dry conditions caused issues for firefighters who were trying to battle a blaze in rural Lumby, Monday afternoon.

A downed power line on the 700 block of Creighton Valley Road ignited the brush fire that quickly spread to a slab pile.

Lumby Fire Chief Tony Clayton says when crews arrived the flames were about 100 feet into the brush.

“The wind was spreading the flames uphill and starting spot fires,” he says. “The guys had to take the slab pile apart by hand … it was very labour intensive.”

Reports of the blaze came in around 2 p.m., and both Coldstream and Lavington fire crews were called in to assist.

Clayton says the conditions were very dry and the situation could have easily got out of hand, if he hadn't had the help of nearby departments.

The blaze was brought under control about 5 p.m.
