Support for SORCO

Around 800 people viewed raptors and just had a good time in general at Sunday's open house at the South Okanagan Rehabilitation Centre for Owls, SORCO.

The event is the annual big fund-raiser for the owl rehabilitation centre in Oliver.

"I'm thrilled, absolutely thrilled," said manager Dale Belvedere of the turnout. "It was a nice steady flow all day and people were really happy and impressed."

SORCO is dedicated to rehabilitating injured birds of prey for release back to the wild, and to educating the public to the important role raptors play in maintaining a healthy ecosystem.

The highlights of the open house included an introduction to the new education centre, eagle pond and food centre.

There were activities for children, a silent auction and barbecue and the opportunity to view seven raptors, including the centre's best known bird, Houdini.

Other birds on display were two that were recently rescued, including a great horned owl chick found at the Penticton Courthouse and a kestrel hawk that was removed from the front grill of a transport truck that was travelling between Rock Creek and Osoyoos.

All donations raised at Sunday's event go directly to bird care.

"This allows us to keep up our good work," said Belvedere.

That work and the event itself, she added, would not be possible without SORCO's dedicated group of volunteers.
