Gregor's off the hook

A B.C. Supreme Court judge has dismissed a bid by five Vancouver residents who wanted the mayor and a councillor removed from office for accepting campaign funds from a union.

The group alleges Mayor Gregor Robertson and Coun. Geoff Meggs were in a conflict of interest for money that Vision Vancouver received before last year's election.

They argued that Meggs had promised to deliver jobs to members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees in exchange for $34,000.

But Judge Elliott Myers says there's nothing wrong with a politician stating policy in hopes of getting campaign funds, nor anything untoward with contributions being made by supporters of that position.

Randal Helten, one of the people who launched the case, called the judge's analysis shallow and says it appears he missed the main thrust of their argument.

Helten says he and the others are studying the ruling to determine whether to appeal.
