Okanagan wind power

A White Rock company has gained approval to construct two wind farms in the Okanagan.

When built, they will become the first wind farms in the region.

Zero Emission Developments Inc. signed agreements today with BC Hydro to construct three wind farms in the province, including ones near the Pennask Summit and Summerland.

According to the company's website, construction will take approximately 18 months.

Once complete, each of the Okanagan wind farms is expected to produce about 15 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 2,500 homes each.

The agreements were signed under BC Hydro's standing offer program, a program that offers a simplified, streamlined procurement process for small clean-energy projects in the province.

Construction is expected to start in late spring or early summer.

"I'm pleased to see additional wind projects being added to BC Hydro's system," said Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett.

"In B.C., we are fortunate to have hydro reservoirs that enable us to integrate variable wind output into the system and provide firm energy supply."
