Earth Hour results

British Columbians saved 15 megawatt hours of electricity Saturday night, and reduced the electricity load across the province by 0.2 per cent during Earth Hour.

That’s the equivalent of turning off about 680,000 LED light bulbs.

The annual global event saw people around the world turn off any unnecessary lights and electronics for one hour – the event began as a one-city initiative in Sydney, Australia in 2007.

Based on information from provided by BC Hydro, Whistler saw the biggest reduction in electricity load (7.2 per cent) by a single community in the province.

Other communities in the Thompson-Okanagan also contributed:

  • Coldstream – 1.4 per cent
  • Kamloops – 1.2 per cent
  • Enderby – 1.2 per cent
  • Spallumcheen – 1.2 per cent
  • Sicamous – 1.0 per cent
  • Peachland – 0.5 per cent
  • Summerland – 0.5 per cent
  • West Kelowna – 0.5 per cent
