Police shooting victim ID'd

The B.C. Coroner's Service has confirmed the identity of a man who died following a police shooting in Castlegar last week.

The man was Waylon Jesse Edey, aged 39, of Yahk.

Edey was shot Jan. 29 following an encounter with RCMP officers near the east end of the Kinnaird Bridge on Highway 3. He was transported to Kootenay-Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail, but succumbed to his injuries a short time after his arrival.

The coroner's service and RCMP's Independent Investigations Office continue to investigate the death.

The IIO will investigate whether any offences under the Criminal Code may have been committed by the police officers involved. The mandate of the coroners service in such cases is broader, and its investigation may look at events that led up to the fatal outcome and whether there are recommendations that might prevent future deaths in similar circumstances.
