Snow removal underway

Residents living in the suburbs will soon have the snow removed from their streets.

City of Kelowna snow removal and ice control crews are now clearing priority three roads.

While in Vernon, crews have plowed and sanded all main roads and are now moving into residential areas. Local roads will be plowed first, followed by lanes and cul-de-sacs.

Tanya Laing Gahr says starting Tuesday night crews will also begin removing snow from the downtown core, 32 Street, 27 Street and 48 Avenue.

“The snow removal process is completed from 12 to 7 a.m. and will be conducted over a two-day period,” she explains.

Both the City of Vernon and the City of Kelowna remind residents that they can assist the snow plowing process in their neighbourhoods by removing vehicles from roadways until plowing and sanding has been completed.

The Kelowna Fire Department is also asking asking residents to clear snow away from fire hydrants in front of their property to ensure easy access in case of emergency.

Communications Supervisor Tom Wilson reminds residents and business owners that they are responsible for clearing their driveway and the sidewalks adjacent to their property.

“However, not everyone is able to shovel the snow and that’s what makes being a Snow Buster the neighbourly thing to do," says Wilson.

What is a Snow Buster?

Snow Busters are individuals or families who help their neighbours by clearing snow from driveways and sidewalks without being asked or expecting thanks. Residents can nominate a Snow Buster online or by emailing [email protected].
