Freezing rain warning

Update -- Dec. 5

Okanagan residents are being warned that freezing rain is on the way and could possibly result in treacherous highway conditions.

Environment Canada has issued warnings for the entire Okanagan Valley from Osoyoos to Vernon.

The special weather warning states that mild and moist air will move over the South Coast mountains today and further into the central and southeastern interior overnight.

“This, in combination with sub-freezing surface temperatures throughout most valleys has the potential to produce freezing rain in these areas.”

The mild moist air will could lead to rain falling into sub-freezing air which will freeze on contact, creating hazardous icy travelling conditions.

As drivers are being urged to take extra care, DriveBC is also issuing their own highway warnings.

There is a freezing rain warning for the Coquihalla in both directions between Hope and Kamloops until Sunday. They expect Saturday to be the worst.

A similar warning has also been issued for the Okanagan Connector, where freezing rain mixed with snow has been forecasted for Merritt and West Kelowna until Sunday.
