Accident on Coquihalla

Update -- 3 p.m.

One person is dead after a single vehicle crash on Highway 5, south of Merritt.

According to the RCMP, witnesses say they were passed by a speeding 2004 Silver Mazda 3. The vehicle then lost control and veered into the center median where it began to tumble end over end.

The male driver suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The highway has now reopened to single lane traffic in both directions.


Update -- 12:15 p.m.

Traffic has begun moving once again on the Coquihalla highway, after a serious vehicle crash Monday morning.

Witnesses at the scene say a silver car -- believed to be travelling eastbound -- lost control and rolled across the median, coming to rest near the edge of the westbound lane. 

DriveBC is warning motorists to expect a 30 minute delay near the accident scene. 


An accident on the Coquihalla is affecting traffic this morning.

Witnesses say westbound traffic has come to a complete stop 20 kilometres south of Merritt and a medevac helicopter has been brought to the scene.

There is no estimated time of reopening.
