Chief urged to quit over contract

At least one member of a tiny Metro Vancouver First Nation is calling for their chief's resignation over an $800,000 bonus paid on an economic development contract.

Documents published under a federal financial-transparency law show Chief Ron Giesbrecht of the Kwikwetlem (kwee-kwet-lum) First Nation was paid $914,219 in remunerations and $16,574 in expenses for the financial year ending March 31, 2014.

A statement issued by the band says that of those funds, $800,000 was an agreed bonus from economic development contracts.

Band member Ron Jackman, who attended a meeting of angry band members on Friday, says he was outraged by the payment because so many people are suffering in the community and he's calling for Giesbrecht's resignation.

Jackman says if Giesbrecht doesn't resign, members will have a band meeting over their chief's political future.

A separate statement from the band issued Friday says Giesbrecht has made it clear he is accountable to band members and is addressing their questions and concerns.
