A second fire has broken out on the opposite side of the mountain, kilometres away from the now 313 hectare Apex Mountain area.
The fire, deemed the Boot Hill fire, is aggressive and moving quickly. It has now grown to over 138 hectares in size.
The Ministry of Forests is reporting that it is zero per cent contained.
Fire Information Officer Melissa Klassen says they believe the fire was started by lightning that struck on July 14, smouldered and then lit on July 16.
“Often we see these types of fires pop up in July because we have more lightning in these summer months. What happens most often is that these strikes don't initially start a wildfire, instead they smoulder for days, even up to two weeks before they ignite,” says Klassen.
The fire was showing very aggressive fire behaviour yesterday, a Rank 5 (out of 6), but has slowed down to a Rank 2 or 3 Thursday morning. However, Klassen warns as temperatures and winds increase conditions could change dramatically.
The fire is located northeast of Hedley, BC. There are currently no structures in danger and no evacuation alerts have been issued.
