Feds invest in BC green program

The federal government is investing $4.1 million in a clean energy project in British Columbia.

In an announcement Monday, Minister of International Trade and MP for Abbotsford Ed Fast announced the Harper government's investment in the British Columbia Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Project.

The clean energy initiative will support the installation of approximately 300 charging stations in urban areas and 30 fast-charging stations along major transportation routes.

The program is being led by BC Hydro and supported by the BC government and private sector investment. The project will also see the implementation of a data network, which will centrally collect charging data.

BC Hydro's chief technology officer said "In BC, we are very fortunate to have clean, hydroelectric power, which makes our province a great place for electric vehicles. We are pleased to support the development of a comprehensive and accessible charging network that is enabled by clean electricity."

The investment comes via the Harper Government's ecoENERGY Innovation Initiative which will provide $268 million over five years to support research, development and demonstration projects that produce and use energy in a more clean and efficient manner.
