Prolific offender swamped
RCMP in Salmon Arm took a prolific offender into custody after cornering the man in a weeded area of Shuswap Lake.
Police spotted the man at about 9 a.m. Wednesday in the Tappen area after he drove past an officer in a white Ford F350.
As the officer began turning his vehicle around the driver sped away.
"The vehicle was found abandoned nearby and it was confirmed as being stolen from Kamloops two days earlier," says Staff Sgt Kevin Keane.
Officers eventually spotted the man near the Tappen Mill and pursued the suspect on foot.
He waded chest deep into an area of Shuswap Lake before facing police and brandishing a knife.
"Two police officers and the police dog entered the lake and were able to disarm the suspect and take him into custody," says Keane.
"The suspect is a heavy methamphetamine and heroin user. Search of the vehicle produced several items believed stolen as well as a police scanner."
Keane says the suspect faces several charges related to Wednesday's incident. He remains in custody.
