Attempted grave robbing
Chilliwack RCMP are investigating a strange occurrence that took place at a cemetery last week.
Family members attending the site April 20, on Chilliwack Mountain Road, found a grave site had been partially dug up.
The coffin of the deceased, had been there for twenty years, had not been entered. However several shovels were left at the scene.
According to Cpl. Len vanNieuwenhuizen, it’s believed the deceased had been buried with family heirlooms, including jewelry, and this is what the thieves may have been after. The coffin was cemented closed and had not been breached.
“This is a disturbing occurrence,” says Cpl. Len vanNieuwenhuizen.
“We are taking this very seriously. The cemetery is located in a rural and remote area so we are asking the assistance of the general public in solving this.”
Police believed the grave may have been dug up several days prior to April 20.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Chilliwack RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
