Body pulled from water

8:45 a.m. update April 28:

A search has ended and RCMP have taken over the investigation of a fatal boating accident in the northern section of B.C.'s Georgia Strait.

Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre spokesman Paul Tasker confirms a body found Sunday evening off the shores of Texada Island is that of a missing Metro Vancouver man.

The victim vanished at around 9:30 Saturday evening when he and a woman were thrown into the water when their five metre power boat capsized in bad weather.

Tasker has few details about the victim but confirms next of kin have been notified and the Mounties are now in charge of the case.

The woman, in her 30s', is recovering from severe hypothermia after swimming for six hours to reach the shores of Texada Island and then walking for several more hours before finding a cabin where she could call for help.

A search for the man began Sunday afternoon, shortly after the accident was reported.

6:45 a.m. update April 28: Rescue officials say a body was pulled from waters in the northern section of the Strait of Georgia on Sunday night, almost 24 hours after a small boat capsized in rough weather with two people aboard.

9:30 p.m. update April 27: The search for a missing boater off the coast of Texada Island has been suspended after a possible body was spotted by search crews, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre has confirmed.

Crews spent Sunday evening looking for any sign of the man near the southern tip of Texada Island, between Halfmoon Bay and Hornby Island.

JRCC spokesman Lt. Paul Pendergast said the search was being suspended after crews found what they believed to be a body in the search area. An investigation is underway to determine if it belongs to the missing boater.
