Swallowing 1.3kg of drugs

A traveller is in custody in Metro Vancouver after arriving from Britain literally stuffed with illegal drugs.

The Canada Border Services Agency says the man was arrested at Vancouver International Airport on March 23 as border service agents became concerned that he might have swallowed narcotics in order to smuggle them into the country.

CBSA says several pellets tested positive for suspected heroin after the man expelled them and a hospital X-ray confirmed that more remained in his digestive tract.

In all, 67 pellets weighing 1.36 kilograms were recovered between March 23 and March 26.

Forty-year-old United Kingdom resident John Josephs has now been charged with importation and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

CBSA says its border officers made 2,525 drug seizures in the Pacific Region last year, keeping more than 1,256 kilograms of drugs off B.C. streets.
