14 vehicle crash on Hwy. 1
The Trans Canada Highway is open again west of Golden following a collision involving 14 vehicles shut down the highway for nearly nine hours overnight.
The incident occurred about 11:30 Tuesday night at the top of Heather Hill about 60km west of Golden.
Police say nine tractor trailer units, a pickup pulling a trailer, a rental vehicle pulling a trailer and three other vehicles were involved in the crash.
"This collision started as a result of a westbound commercial tractor trailer unit jack knifing on the highway and totally blocking the road," says RCMP Sgt. Mike Pears who indicated the roads were snow covered and more snow was falling at the time.
"As vehicles came into this area some were unable to stop and ran into each other. Others tried to avoid contact, however, multiple collisions occurred."
Injuries appeared to be minor. Those suffering injuries were sent to hospital in Revelstoke and Golden.
"RCMP remind motorists that it is still winter on area highways," says Pears.
"The use of good snow tires is recommended. Please allow extra time to get to your destination and adjust your speed to the conditions of the highway."
