Man killed in Coq. crash

UPDATE 5 P.M. - RCMP in Merritt confirm one man is dead as a result of a single vehicle collision on the Coquihalla Highway 25km south of Merritt. The crash occurred about 7:40 a.m. Friday.

Police say investigation determined a Chevy pickup was travelling northbound when the driver lost control. The pickup crossed the centre median and encroached into the southbound lanes rolling before coming to rest on its roof. The 66-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

RCMP continue to investigate. The man's name has not yet been released.


11:30 a.m. update: Highway 5 Southbound has reopened 20 km south of Merritt.

9: 20 a.m.: The southbound lanes of the Coquihalla are closed this morning due to a vehicle incident south of Merritt.

Detours are available via Hwy 97C to Hwy 5A to Hwy 3, also on Hwy 8 to Hwy 1.

An assessment is currently in progress. The road is expected to reopen between 12-4 p.m.
