Licensed grow-op shooting

A brazen daylight shooting and assault that injured two people in Langley Sunday afternoon started at a licensed medical marijuana grow-operation.

Mounties confirmed Monday that both victims are associated with the grow-op, located on 214 Street in the Walnut Grove neighbourhood, and were attacked by suspects trying to get inside.

One man was shot while the other was assaulted. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The shooting sparked a manhunt through the surrounding residential area, where families watched heavily armed police chase at least one suspect across their properties.

“As I went to open the door, I saw the suspect running through our yard obviously looking very distressed,” witness Glenda Johnston said. “My husband grabbed me and said get upstairs and get on the phone to 911.”

The situation unfolded too close to home for some locals, who remained shaken on Monday.

Cpl. Holly Marks said the shooter showed a disregard for public safety.

“Anytime that there’s a weapon and shots are being fired, there’s a potential for danger for anyone,” Marks said. “Bullets can travel through walls.”

Mounties from Surrey and Langley, including one off-duty officer and multiple police dogs, eventually tracked down and arrested two men and a woman, who remain in custody facing charges.

The suspects’ names haven’t been released but they are all Surrey residents between 22 and 29 years old.

A firearm was also seized.

Marks said investigators have obtained a search warrant for the grow-op to gather further evidence.
