Hwy. 1 reopens

Update 10:00 PM

Road has now reopened from Junction with Hwy 12, LIytton South Access to Spences Bridge.

Update: 4:15 p.m.

RCMP are confirming one person has died in a four vehicle collision on Highway 1, 15 km east of Lytton.

According to Sgt. Rob Vermeulen one of the four vehicles involved in the collision was a tanker truck and first responders had to deal with a fire involving this truck.

"Tragically, a passenger in one of the vehicles was killed. Police are currently attempting to do next of kin notifications. As such, no name is being released," he said.

Police continue to investigate this collision. Please check with drivebc.ca for updates on the highway closure.

It's getting more difficult for drivers to get to and from the coast as yet another major highway is closed.

Highway 1 has now been shut down, in both directions, 25 km. east Lytton to Spences Bridge (36.2 km.) because of a vehicle incident.

Hwy. 5 has been closed since an avalanche Thursday. Traffic was going around the closed route by taking Hwy. 8 from Merritt to Hwy. 1.

The last route open to the lower mainland is Hwy. 3, the Hope Princeton.

DriveBC has no estimated time of opening for Hwy. 1 or Hwy. 5.
