UPDATE 10:14 A.M.
Hwy. 5 reopened at 10:03 after being closed for three hours for avalanche control.
The closure was meant to allow crews to reduce the snowpack in avalanche paths and clean up any deposits that reach the highway.
Road conditions are still slippery with compact snow; drivers are urged to take caution.
Avalanche-control work will force a four-hour closure of the major highway linking BC's south coast and southern Interior on Saturday morning.
The Transportation Ministry says the closure of Coquihalla Highway 5 will begin at 7 a.m.
The closure will allow crews using helicopters to reduce the snowpack in avalanche paths and clean up any deposits that reach the highway.
Detours are available to motorists at Highway 1 at Kamloops and Hope, or via Highway 8 and Highway 1 at Merritt.
The ministry says it may periodically close other highways throughout the weekend because of avalanche control work.
Highway 1 is also closed. The route was blocked by an avalanche, it may be open by noon today (Saturday).
Updates on highway and road conditions will be available on the DriveBC website.
