Early-morning blaze in highrise

Vancouver firefighters made quick work of a blaze in a well-known apartment building on the city's west side, but not before hundreds of residents spent several anxious hours forced from their suites.

Crews arrived at the eight-storey Hycroft Towers just before 3 a.m. Monday and quickly boosted the response to a third alarm as flames shot from the windows of a seventh-floor unit in the three wing complex in the city's upscale South Granville district.

But most of the damage was contained to the single suite, which fire officials said was vacant and undergoing renovations.

They said there was very little damage to other units in the 158-suite building and residents were allowed to return shortly before 6 a.m.

Cause of the fire is under investigation.

No one was seriously hurt.
