7:26 p.m. update: A teenage girl remains in critical condition and police are requesting drunk driving charges following a brutal crash in Nanaimo.
Jasmine Bussier, 18, was driving four of her friends home from a concert Friday when a Chrysler Intrepid slammed into her vehicle.
The force of the crash sent Bussier’s car into some trees, according to RCMP. She and the four other passengers suffered critical injuries including broken limbs and concussions. Crews had to use the Jaws of Life to save them from the smashed-up vehicle.
“From just the damage alone on the side of the vehicle I’m surprised that we weren’t dealing with fatalities immediately,” said Nanaimo RCMP Const. Norm Smith. “They were pinned in there pretty good. The intrusion into the car was over half a metre.”
Three of the injured teens had to undergo surgery for their injuries, and while a 16-year-old passenger suffered a broken shin.
Police believe the 21-year-old Ontario man behind the wheel of the Chrysler was drunk and speeding, and ran a red light.
The man, who has not been identified, was airlifted to Victoria General Hospital in critical condition and is facing charges of impaired driving causing bodily harm.
He has been released from custody and is due to appear in court later in October.
A suspected drunk driver from Ontario has been arrested following a crash that sent five teenagers to hospital Friday night in Nanaimo.
Mounties say the victims were in a Hyundai Accent turning left at the intersection of Bowen and Wellington roads when a Chrysler Intrepid rammed into their vehicle.
Investigators believe the 19-year-old driver of the Intrepid zoomed through a red light at high speed.
He was airlifted to Victoria General Hospital in critical condition, and is facing impaired driving charges.
The five youths in the Accent were all taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital with various injuries, including broken bones.
The Nanaimo Traffic Services is continuing to investigate and will be consulting with Crown on potential charges.
