Divers body found

3:00 p.m. Oct. 14 update: The body of a missing Washington state diver has been recovered near Nanaimo.

RCMP say a commercial diver located the body during a dive off Snake Island.

Police say the diver was able to secure the body until an RCMP patrol vessel could arrive.

The missing man was among three Washington residents who went diving Friday near Snake Island, a popular spot that's a boat ride from Departure Bay in Nanaimo.

The Dive Industry Association of BC has said the men were participating in a deep dive when complications arose.

One of the divers made it back to shore and another was confirmed dead on Saturday, leaving the third man missing until his body was found the following day.

5:00 p.m. update:  The RCMP say they've called off the search for a diver who disappeared in an incident that also killed another person off Vancouver Island.

The Mounties say three divers from the United States were participating in a recreational dive near Snake Island, a short boat ride from Nanaimo's Departure Bay, on Friday afternoon.

The Dive Industry Association of B.C. says in a news release that the three were participating in a deep dive when "complications arose."

One of the divers made it back to shore and another was confirmed dead on Saturday, leaving the third diver missing.

The RCMP and the coast guard were involved in the search, but those efforts have been called off and the case has now been turned over to the coroner.

Neither the RCMP nor the association has confirmed exactly what went wrong during the dive.

Police in Nanaimo say one person is dead, one is missing and another is back on shore after a recreational diving accident.

The incident occurred in the late afternoon near Snake Island, a short boat ride from Departure Bay.

Sgt. Sheryl Armstrong of the Nanaimo RCMP says police and Canadian Coast Guard vessels attended the scene.

She says coast guard divers are in the water attempting to locate the missing diver.

Armstrong says investigators are also interviewing the diver who is now back on shore.
